April’s race is in the books! I’m excited that I have been able to keep up with my goal of 1 race a month, and even more excited that I pushed and did more longer distances than just 5k.

Redneck Run AZ

April’s race was the Redneck Run. I had opted for the 10K, and I am glad I did. It ended up being a great morning for a run! I did like that it was the same course of as the 5K, we just did two loops. In true Lisa fashion, I went out faster than I anticipated… but felt really good. That was when I realized that I just might be able to finish with an average pace of 11 minutes per mile. It would be a big step towards reaching my half marathon goal of breaking 2:30!

Redneck Run Finish
PR! (with the pups who came to cheer me on!)

The course was great, we basically circled the Westgate Entertainment District and the University of Phoenix Stadium. Pretty flat, except for a small dip when we dropped into a greenbelt area. Once I knew I had a chance of that 11 minute mile pace, I really tried to hold myself back and not push too hard in the first loop.

In the middle of the 2nd loop, Siri decided that I had asked her something… and had to let me know the she “…didn’t quite get that, Lisa” No big, except for that fact that my Runkeeper app never started my verbal cues again to let me track where I was as far as pacing went.

I ended up finishing with a new 10K PR of 1:13. That put my pace at 11:45 minutes per mile. I was just a little frustrated, but it is what it is… I’ll get there.

What’s next?
pool training for Tri
I will conquer the swim!

So now my focus is 100% on my May race. Ok, that isn’t completely true… it’s about 98% on my May race, and 2% on my June race. May is the Mom’s Tri. I am still slightly freaked about the swim. Which is why I am so focused on it. But I can’t forget that the end of June I am running a half, so I do have to work on building my distance up again! OH MY GOD!

How is it the end of March already??? Life has really gotten away from me, and I apologize! I have a lot to share, but I’ll try to make this update as short and sweet as possible.

February Race Recap
rainy cold race
Proof that I actually take bad race pictures!

February’s race was the FroYo 5K. I’ve run this before, and it was a fun little run. This year, the weather did not cooperate and I finally ran my 1st race in the rain. I had planned for it, and had extra clothes with us, but wow. I was cold and grumpy. For once I look miserable in my race pictures. I usually look like I am having fun – not this time! On a side note, I did PR (by 30 seconds, but a PR is a PR) and even placed 9th in my age group! Lil’ WO placed 4th again…1 place out of getting an Age Group award! He also got robbed of winning the costume contest – the boy actually ran in a Chewbacca costume!

March Race Recap

March was actually 2 races… sort of. We decided to run the Kiss Me I’m Irish Challenge. On St. Patrick’s Day, we ran the Kilt Run. It was an effort to break the World Record of people running in kilts. Unfortunately, not enough people were there to break the record, but I ran my fastest race EVER. Of course, it was a 1K, which is about half a mile. Plus – free beer!

Yes… I was THAT hot!

The next day we ran the Kiss Me I’m Irish 8K.  It was a fun event, but we went from a cold and rainy February race to a hot and sweaty March race. I went out too fast and was miserable by the end. Like miserable enough to ditch my tank top and just run in my sports bra! I will say that the water stations weren’t the best, and I definitely recommend bringing your own water bottle if you decide to run it. Everything else was great. Especially free beer at 9 am!

Upcoming Races

I have been in full training mode lately. April 9th is the Redneck Run 10K.  So far it looks like I am running it on my own. I was debating on whether I should try to come up with a costume, but think I am just going to wing it. I haven’t really done much work on my run or speed because I have been focusing on something else…

In May, instead of running my typical race (Tinkerbell Half Marathon) I am competing in my 1st triathlon, the MomsTri! I finally pulled the trigger and signed up. I am nervous as hell, and so instead of focusing my training on speed or strength, all of my focus has been on mastering the swim. I am just now getting there, so it’s time to start upping my running mileage again because….

In June I am tackling a new half marathon – The Beach Babe. It’s going to be a small “race-cation” since we’ll be heading out to Long Beach, CA for it. I am thinking of adding a couple of days out there to bury my toes in the sand and recharge!

The Search is On

So now I have the challenge of finding races for the hottest time of the year in Phoenix; July, August, September, and October. I have some ideas but am still looking.  I’ll take any recommendations!

What a start to 2017!!!

The first race of the year is under my belt… and while it didn’t go quite as well as I wanted, I really shouldn’t complain. My goal for the AZ Rock n Roll Half Marathon was to break 2:30. Well, I definitely did not race my plan… I ended up trying to run at Lil WO’s pace at the beginning of the race. That meant going out too fast, and I just didn’t have enough to get the negative splits I needed. I did PR though, which is good. 2:35 is nothing to sneeze at – so close to my goal! To be honest, I don’t really like that course. After running it twice I think I can say that without only using the experience of running it when I was hurt (and really shouldn’t have been running at all.)

Ambassador!

2017 Nuun AmbassadorThen I found out that I was selected to be a part of #TeamNuun as a Nuun Ambassador! It is totally exciting to get to represent them, I love their products! Most drinks really have a tendency of upsetting my stomach, but not Nuun! Plus, super easy to carry, and simply drop into a water bottle or glass of water when you need a boost of electrolytes.

Bad News as well…

Of course, it hasn’t been all good things, I am writing this in bed recovering from the flu. It’s never any fun to be throwing up all day. Or having your body hurt everywhere anytime you move. The good news is I am feeling better – and able to sit up. Sometimes it’s the little things you have to appreciate.
