One of my favorite things about running at the runDisney races, is the fact that so many people run in costume. I’ll be honest, when I first started looking into it, I though it was a little silly; but the more I looked at pictures, the more fun I thought it would be. So when I ran my first, a did a very “tame” costume. It was more of a Cheshire Cat “theme” rather than costume. I have stepped up my costume game since then. At the Avenger’s Half, WO and I really went more all out for Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable. I am in the process of pulling my costume for the TinkerBell Half for May, but also have my mind working on the costumes for Wine & Dine.
If you have never run in a costume, it doesn’t have to be a huge production (or involve a tutu, even though many seem to). While some people go completely all out, a lot of people run like I do, in something that at least resembles the character they are representing. Personally, I try to accurately represent the character, but I also pick characters that have looks that are easy to run in. Kim Possible was a pretty easy choice, she wears cargo pants and a crop top. Very easy to correlate in to traditional running clothes. For TinkerBell, I am planning Mad Hatter (but that *might* change to a Pirates of the Caribbean theme… more info to come) But don’t worry! Creating a costume doesn’t mean you have to be a great seamstress. I admit that I can follow a pattern and sew fairly decently (Thanks Mom!) but that doesn’t mean I am creating costumes from scratch. Quite far from it really.
I find the best way to start is to pick your character! I like to pick something easy to recreate (I am a perfectionist, so I do try to mimic as closely as I can possibly get) Once you have decided on your character, start looking for running clothes that mimic the look. For example, with Mad Hatter; I started looking for blue capris or shorts, a blue sports bra or tank, and an orange shirt that I can alter a bit to re-create his jacket. Remember, I said I do as little sewing as possible (I didn’t even hem the shirt I cut for Kim Possible) so the altering I am talking about is simply cutting it down the center. As I am searching for the pieces I will use to complete the costume, I use Pinterest for saving links so I know where to go back and get them if I end up having to order them online. I also use it for inspiration if I am having trouble coming up with a way to replicate a certain piece of a costume. (You can check out my running board here) Once I complete my costume, I’ll be sure to post it here, along with the Inspiration Character I end up using.
Have costume questions, please ask away! I find that costumes are such a fun way to get even MORE out of the runDisney events and really encourage you to try it out, even if you typically don’t run in costume!

Oh, how I wish it was that easy for us My daughters (now 15 and 13) were alawys such wonderful eaters My eldest learned to use the chopsticks by age 3 yrs! However, now I have this lovely and precocious 3 yr old son who actually starts GAGGING when he smells (1) hamburger simmering, (2) sausage cooking, (3) soup simmering you name it! He literally starts gagging no joke!He loves the book Yummy-Yucky and helps us cook and bake anything.. but, the only real foods I can get him to eat (and this makes no sense whatsoever) are: (1) my whole-wheat spaghetti with meat sauce; (2) Uncle Ben’s 90 second rice with veggies, (3) any quick bread with flax & whole wheat flour, (4) vanilla yogurt, (5) tapioca pudding, (6)wheat thins, (7) Wheat Chex, (8) brown sugar pop tarts, (9) apples, (10) bananas, (8) McDonald’s chicken nuggets, (9) Ovaltine chocolate milk .Honestly it makes no sense I am only biding my time for the next year or two until I can actually start making him eat different foods. He hates the smell of pizza, hot dogs, mac & cheese, and all those other usual toddler favorites. His doctor doesn’t seem to worried, since he is at the 98% of height and weight he’s a very tall and slender boy and very active sigh
