Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!

February 21st, 2013

So, what did you do on Valentine’s Day? I decided to play along during a Twitter Chat/Contest being hosted by Sandals Resorts. I had a little free time in my day (a rarity lately) and since I am constantly testing and learning, I was curious on how this brand would conduct and respond during one.

Sandals Resorts Well, a couple of things happened. First off – I was impressed with the way the chat was handled. I really wish I could have seen behind the scenes at how they covered various accounts (they had a few branded accounts participating) I digress – they were good at keeping the conversation flowing, NOT just tweeting out questions. Accounts would retweet participants, offer their own answers, and respond to some tweets. I was impressed, since I have participated in some BAD ones before…. Yes, I came away from the chat impressed!

Secondly, I ended up winning a 6 day/5 night vacation to the Sandals Resort of my choice. Yea, that really happened. And I was in shock (still am to be perfectly honest) Again, the Social Media Manager in me wants a deeper glimpse into the Behind the Scenes of being able to offer such a large prize, the winner selection process, and redemption process. I guess in the next few weeks I will get a one sided view of the process.  And yes, I am very excited – and yes, you will be able to follow along a lot of my vacation on any (and most likely ALL) of my social media accounts.
einstein1So, what did I take away from the whole process (besides the actual vacation I won?) Twitter Chats/Contests can work, but you need to put some real thought behind it. Create a short and easy to remember hashtag to help you track who is involved; Sandals used #SandalsVDay. Be sure to spread the word about it on your other social media accounts, I actually stumbled across the details on Sandals Facebook page!  Put a lot of thought into your questions you are asking your fans as well. Sandals did a lot of great questions around romance and vacations (basically two of the main things that they offer!) but in a way that participants did not have to have stayed at a Sandals resort to answer. Probably the biggest one – don’t just sit back and wait until it is time to ask the next question. Engage with the people that have come to play! Retweet your favorite answers, reply to people that have offered up a funny or particular touching answer to your questions.

One thing to note; your first twitter chat probably won’t be HUGE, unless you are working with a large brand and tie a big prize to it (much like a 6 day/5 night stay at a luxury resort) But don’t let that discourage you. Think through your strategy and be sure that you are offering a conversation that will be of value to your followers, and the larger community that you are a part of!

How Old is Too Old?

September 22nd, 2012

I often wonder, when do you finally decide that you are “Too Old” for something. (yes this is going to be another blog post in a soon-to-be long list of “I’m getting old” posts”)

What brought this on, you might be wondering? Well… one of my co-workers came in to the office with an adorable purple streak in her hair the other day. I have often looked at a lot of pictures of girls with cute colored stripes. I love the look. Seeing it on my co-worker made me like it even more. But could *I* pull it off? Or is  39 too old?

I think my co-workers are surprised at me sometimes. I may wear a cute outfit to work and when they ask where I got it, sometimes they seem surprised when I say “Rue 21” or “Charlotte Russe” Yes, the fact is, I shop at the same stores that my 14 year old daughter shops at. According to one co-workers, I am one of the very few people who can break the rule of “Parents should not shop for themselves at the same stored their children shop at”

Now I do admit that I don’t try to wear everything in those stores. I am not buying mini-skirts, or leather pants, etc. I stick to things that when I try them on, I feel comfortable in. If the thought “can I pull this off” even enters my mind, the clothes are immediately put on the “Go Back” rack.

So, how old is too old to try the latest *trends*? Can a nearly 40 year old pull off a purple streak in their hair? Or do you think it is just a last gasp at hanging on to the “I refuse to grow up” mentality?

On Writing and Re-Branding

September 20th, 2012

I always find that I figure out that I miss something at the oddest times.

Let’s take a look at writing… I write every day at the office. Emails, reports, audits, content… you name it, and I am writing it. But last night, while helping WO fine tune his resume, I realized that I miss writing – even though I seem to be constantly doing it.

Maybe the issue is that I am not writing about what I am truly passionate about. Yes, I can blog about replacement windows; but while I am invested in writing a piece that is informational, sharable, and valuable for my client and their audience, I am not personally passionate about windows. However, editing my husband’s resume made me very happy and content. Obviously I am passionate about sharing his knowledge and skills (and helping him land a possible dream job)

So it is obviously time to brush off the blog, and start writing about the things I am passionate about again. At the same, I don’t think I am who I was when I started this blog. I don’t know if the title and theme fit anymore. I think it may be time for some personal re-branding.

It’s not going to be easy. I have learned enough to know that if branding a company is hardwork, branding yourself is even harder. After all, you need to pull together your professional and personal lives and figure out how those two aspects of your life can “play nice” together. I try to really be myself at work and my dealing with clients, so I think that I am fairly authentic at work, but at the same time… I am not sure how to mesh my professional opinions, my personal struggles (let’s be honest, we all have them) and my family life into one over-arching “Personal Brand”

Maybe it is because I am getting closer and closer to the dreaded 4-0, but I have been strangely introspective lately. (That should be obvious just by this post)
