Well Dear Readers, I have officially graduated from Physical Therapy and I have learned some lessons from it.
What have I learned? I can say with absolute certainty that I don’t want to get hurt again. Physical Therapy itself wasn’t bad. And the therapists at the place I went (The CORE Institute) were great. I did feel just a bit out of place, I was the youngest patient in the office by a long shot.
But the other thing I learned is that little things can add up to bigger progress than you might think. My exercises seemed very simple. Almost too simple. Sure, I know that bridges strengthens glutes and obviously single leg presses on a leg press machine are going to make a little bit of a difference. What I didn’t know was that things as simple as side steps and stepping up onto a box would also make a huge difference. I can say I was honestly shocked at the difference from my initial assessment to my “Graduation Day”.
Running has been a little easier too, though I was pretty restricted on the distances that my Therapist would “let” me run. I haven’t gone past 5 miles since the Rock n Roll Half Marathon. With my “release” I had to promise a sensible training plan for the Pixie Dust Challenge and to continue the exercises I had been working on. The promise of easier (and maybe faster) running was a key focus for me. I mean, the pain was subsiding already, though I know it easily could have happened again without the strengthening exercises that I learned through my therapy.
