Over the Holidays, Disney updated some regulations about what is and what is not allowed in the theme parks, and one of these updates had to do with costumes on guests over the age of 14 (in case you are wondering – it is not allowed!) Many of us wondered how this change was going to affect runDisney Races. One of the amazingly fun parts of the experience is running in costume – or checking out all the costumes that the much more creative people have come up with. Run Disney has officially announced the changes to their costume guidelines on their blog.
Highlight:
- Must be family friendly
- Guests dressed as characters may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other guests
- Costumes cannot contain weapons that resemble or could be mistaken for real weapons
- No sharp objects, pointed objects, or materials that may accidentally strike other guests
- Under 13 – costumes and some masks may be worn, as long as mask does not cover entire face
- 14 or older – no layered costumes (ie Jedi Robes), no Costume props; including ones that surround the body
- Costumes may not reach the ground
- Capes may be no longer than the waist
- Themed clothing is acceptable
- Acceptable accessories include: transparent wings, plastic light sabers, toy swords, tutus, and headwear as long as it does not cover face
- NO masks of any kind
I think the biggest impact will be costumes like Jedi robes (but you can be a Jedi without the robe) and the full body type costumes. I loved some of the elaborate costumes that you saw every now and then (A squadron of tie fighters anyone? Or the Churro costume?) But most of the guidelines make complete sense in my opinion. In the state of the world today, it’s better for Disney to be safe! I admit that I am bummed that is I run in a more specific character costume, I won’t be able to wear it into the Parks for pictures with some of my favorite characters. It was so awesome to chat with the Mad Hatter last year after the TinkerBell Half – he was quite impressed with my costume, don’t ya know….
What are your thoughts on the new guidelines? Do you think they will take the fun out of the races?
