We’re All Mad Here!

One of the best things about runDisney races is the costumes! This is the race I have gone out the most for. Running as Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable was great for the Avenger’s Half Marathon, but let’s face it – the costume was a cut-off tech shirt and green running capris! Pretty simple.

This race, since I am going solo, I chose Mad Hatter.

My Inspiration

I know, it’s not TinkerBell or Peter Pan themed; but that is one of the great things about runDisney – you aren’t required to stick to the theme! (Technically you aren’t even required to have a costume, but it is fun… so why not?) Now, I will say, this costume was not quite as simple as Kim Possible. But if you have a tiny bit of sewing skills and a sewing machine, you should be able to do something like this too! The only pieces I had to make were the vest and the hat.

The vest actually started out as a men’s short sleeve tech shirt. I cut off the sleeves and just rolled the raw edges under and did a quick seam to finish off. Then, I marked the center of the shirt, and cut around the collar and created a V to the mark. I then cut straight down the center. These will turn into the lapels of the Mad Hatter’s “jacket”

I hate hemming, so I bought some orange bias tape to finish off the raw edges around the collar and down the center. Simply open it up and slide the raw edge in and stitch it down! After that was done, I added snaps to close the “jacket” and tacked down the points of the lapels so they would flap while I am running.

The last step was to fit the jacket to my body. I didn’t want it super baggy, but if you don’t mind – you can totally skip this step! I slipped the jacket on inside-out, and had my husband pin the shirt so it was fitted to my body. After a couple of quick seams, I trimmed off the excess.  The last little bit I added was a couple of buttons.

The Hat was a lot easier than I expected – I found the instructions online at Fleecefun.com. I made the small size. Instead of doing tulle embellishments, I used green ribbon around the crown, and made the size sign out of a 2×3 piece of glossy photo paper using a sharpie! I hot glued four clips to the bottom so I could clip it in my hair for the race. You could add it to a headband, but I have yet to find one that will stay on my head!

Ready to Run!

The last little pieces are green capris (recycled from my Kim Possible costume) and a bright blue sports bra.  I decided to not worry about adding a bowtie (which was my original plan) I just worried a little too much about it collecting sweat and chaffing.
