Yesterday, my Adventure in Physical Therapy began.
To recap – I am in Physical Therapy for what I am calling a Femoral Neck Stress Fracture, though my Dr never saw a fracture. More on that here and here. Regardless of what it is/was I have ended up in Physical Therapy for 2 days a week for a total of six weeks.
So yesterday was my 1st session. It started out with my Therapist really figuring out where I needed to start. We chatted a bit about the injury – and I did come clean about running the Rock n Roll Half Marathon, even though I was only cleared for slow, short distances (3.1 miles and then 13.1 miles the next day apparently do not count as short and a 12 minute mile pace does not count as slow). I definitely got the side eye for that (as I should have) I did let her know that I was never in pain, though I did have a bit of an ache for a couple of days afterward.
So after our chat (which included the fabulous news that this therapy may affect my speed in a positive way) she evaluated me to see what I needed exactly. What we found out is that I have weak hips. My right side, the side with the injury, is weaker… but not by much. My core is pretty weak as well, but we weren’t focusing all that much on it. I am sure it will getting incorporated in.
So, now it is time to get to work. I was not ready to walk out from that 1st appointment without doing a little work. So we went through 4 exercises that I will be doing on a daily basis for now… seated hip rotations (internal and external), single leg bridges, and “clamshells”. It was nice to know that some of the exercises I was starting to do on my own are right on the money!
All in all a good experience. My therapist is great – and even told me that if I am seeing the progress and results I need faster to let her know. She won’t hold me to a six week program if I don’t need it.
