Treadmill Workout Tips

Living in the Phoenix area, I am lucky enough to have my own treadmill. For the next 4 months, I will pretty much be relying on treadmill workouts to get my mileage in. Running for longer lengths of time on a treadmill is terribly boring, so here are some tips to keep you going while you are logging those miles without moving an inch!

  • Add visual distractions. My iTunes playlist isn’t enough to keep my mind of the minutes or miles ticking by, so I added some visual distraction. Add a TV or computer monitor if you can and catch up on your TV shows. I actually watch things that I don’t need sound, but can follow along. My favorite are nature documentaries focused on the ocean.
  • Change things up. Just to keep my mind occupied, I’ll add some speed or incline variations. Nothing big (unless I am doing interval training or hills repeats) but just having to change my stride keeps me mentally alert.
  • Cover up your monitor. Its so easy to get caught up in watching either the minutes or miles ticking away. Cover up the displays (unless you are doing time based intervals) since I can promise you that staring at that display will drive you crazy.

These are just a few of the tricks that I use to help treadmill runs less boring. Let me know how they work for you, or if you have more tips for me to try!
